I'm sorry to say that my work is cut out for me. Also,,,, I'm losing a lot of material in the forge. By the time I get to where I want to be I might not be able to make a letter opener. I'm thinking I might have to make another billet. Time will tell. Wish I had a press!!!
 
I’m just curious, but what happens when a piece of Damascus is mirror shined then etched. I know I’m showing my ignorance here lol.

The one I just posted was polished to 600 grit then etched and then put into a coffee solution, then polished with carnuba wax.(what's going on in your shop thread)

Just make your next batch of Demascus like my Italian Grandmother made Tomato sauce. "If you have 5 people coming to Dnner make enough for at least 10!!

I know the "big thing" for forge welded materials is more and more and more layers until they look so busy they are dizzy-ing. For my personal tastes as an artist, I believe "less is best". I like the low number of layers because it's much more artistic to my eye. Can't wait until I get to a point I can start trying some of that. Looks great, keep it up. (and send those awful low layer count knives my way and I'll dispose of them properly)
 
I like low layer damascus myself Chris. With only one other "W" billet under my belt I can't tell you what a good fold count is. I have no idea. It's cut for one more fold. Then I will slice it up. Myself,,, I think when I stretch it out it very well might be a lower layer count.
