Ok well wile I was a the blade show I bought a piece of damscus because the pattern drew me in but the problem I am having is it is .145 thick just over an 1/8th. I have never used anything under 3/16 and am afraid it may be to thin. My original thought was for a long 10" blade dagger but I am afraid that 1/8 is just to thin. I really want to make something that encompases the beauty of the damascus but to do so it has to be atleast a 10" blade. Is 1/ to thin for that size blade? Anyone have some blades that are 1/8 and that long that they can post up. Give me your thoughts.

Gahagan, how about a sujihiki?

you know I had not thought of that before because I have never made a kitchen knife before. That is a nice knife. I am just not sure I would have any demand for it. I will think on it though.

Please ! 1/8 is not .145 there is a huge difference if you come to folders. Don't hesitate to ask but try not to confuse the issue when doing so. Isn't 1/8 .125 ? Frank

.145 is 9/64 which is just over 1/8th as I stated in my post and I am not talking about folders I am talking about a dagger or something in a 10" blade so I consider it close enought to a 1/8" because it is closer to that than 3/16" especially once it is cleaned up which will take off of the thickness bringing it that much close to an 1/8th. So I am not confused in the issue.

I Don't make many daggers,
The count is about 3 I think? The ones I did make were out of 1/8" steel/Damascus.

The Fairnbain /Sykes dagger of WWll fame was made of a steel about 1/8" or less, The idea was to slash at target points or slide between the ribs when taking out a sentry from behind. Up into the Heart/Lung area.
Or in front into....

1/8 does the Job.

I would think 1/8 would do well with a dagger blade. Like Laurence said, it should be able to slice and plunge.

Thank you. I was just worried about it being a little to thin for the length. But I may try it anyway.

Gahagan, this is a little knife made from 1/8" 440C. I usually use heavier steels too, and was skeptical about it as I was making it, but wanted to duplicate a Western knife, which was acutually just under at .120. When completed, seemed heavy enough to me and really liked the weight.

Nice looking knife oyu made there. I have always used 3/16 and 1/4 even on my poscket knives. I was just afraid of truning out something that would feel breakable. I like for my knives to be used and in the past they have been used for more rigorous activites so I have simply looked at 1/8 as to thin but. I am willing to give it a chance and see how it holds up.
