After heat treating what grit should the knife be finished to before etching? 800? 1000? Higher? Any tips on finishing ?

I take the finish to 800 grit. It might vary for others but this is what works for me.

After I etch the blade I rub it good with a Cotten towel and then spray with Windex. After that I hand polish with a very fine honing compound.

Usually 800 grit for me. Some go higher. Polish to 1500 grit to 2500 grit depending on what you are looking for as far as a result. With hamons - experiment. Everyone does it a bit different.
