Help me ID this wood

I am looking for some help identifying this species. My best guess so far is mesquite. Its pretty dense and with a lot of force I can barely dent it with a finger nail. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Its some really cool stuff.

I have no idea what wood it is, but sure looks like it would make nice handles.... and the heart wood not even need stabilizing.
 
A long time ago I got some desert ironwood logs, it looks a lot like that. That was probably about 30 years ago, so my memory may not be accurate. It’s got a distinct smell, have you cut any? What does it smell like?
 
It does not have a distinct smell to it is the weird part to me. It has an almost maroon color to it much darker than Brazilian Cherry. I think I am gonna send a sample into USDA for them to identify it. I dont want to sell a knife when I cant say what wood it is!
