I think first of all, I'd like to thank each and every member and moderator that takes the time to answer silly beginner questions here. Seriously, this place is absolutely wonderful for people new to this addicti...err hobby.

I've lurked this forum for a while, reading what I could understand and searching through questions other noobs have asked over the years. I started working on some knife projects a couple months ago, paid a visit to KD member Mr. Sander's shop, built up what I could as far as tools so far... and I still have questions. I think I always will, even if I'm doing this in twenty or thirty years.

So far I've got a small forge, an electric cooker pot for quenching, a HF 1x30 grinder, a few files, a drill press, an angle grinder, and some small odds and ends stuff like sand paper and such.

My "shop" is non-existant. Things like drilling, hand sanding, and file work I do in my living room. All of my grinding is done downstairs and behind the house. My living situation in this city is FAR from optimal as far as having a true shop... but so far I'm getting by. If everything goes all right my wife and I will have saved up enough to buy a house in west TN so I can get back to some nice country living.

But yeah. Every tool I own for this has to be something I can haul up and down a flight of stairs, through a narrow gate, and set up on a stone garden table or clamp to a wooden saw horse for working.

Right now I'm looking to upgrade my grinder a bit. The 1x30 does what it can, but after playing with Mr. Sander's Grizzly... Well, I just know there's a whole world of better stuff out there. My budget isn't all that great, at about $200 if I can get one in the next couple of months, possibly more than that if I can wait until after summer. Again though, options like the NWG are out of my reach since there's no realistic way for me to shoulder the beast and maneuver it into my back yard for work. I really like Boss Dog's new grinder, as it looks like I'd be able to basically break it down into two or more pieces for transporting, but with no price announced and no release date I sort of feel it too is out of my reach.

I've been considering a Craftsman 2x42, but have heard mixed reviews and don't know how much of an improvement over my tiny workhorse 1x30 I could really expect from it.

Anyone else in a similar situation? Any ideas on what I should do?

Oh, and with much help from Mr. Darrin Sanders, so far I've got this to show for my efforts:

Thank you! And yep... I'm surely hooked now. I'm helping a friend now and explaining what I've learned, and after we finish his project I'm moving on to a nice simple (and small ) wharncliffe in 1/8" 01. In retrospect the 1/4" brickbat hard 5160 probably wasn't the simplest choice for my first few endeavors.

Welcome,
Was down in Mandeville during the Superbowl, hurt my knee and couldn't make it to the Quarter, still had a great time.
Nothing like having a mentor to get you started. Well done, keep grindin!

Hello and welcome to Knife Dogs.

We are familiar with your affliction.....it doesn't get any better.

Sorry.

Welcome to the pack and congratulations on the addiction. I can say that word because the first step is admitting, right? No worries though, that's the only step of the 12 step program I will ever complete.

Hey Chris, glad to see you here. Also glad to hear you're still working on those blades. Really glad to hear you're working on something smaller and with a simpler grind. Enjoyed your visit and you're welcome back anytime. If you get a chance post some pics of that wharnny.

Welcome to the Show. Lots more can be done on a simple 2x42 than you would think,.. made my first 20 knives on one, even the italian style automatics.
Compared to the 1x30 it is a great deal better to work on large projects,.. now, that being said,.. it will tide you over until you can decide, YES, my skills are getting good enough to warrent spending the cash on a NWG or some varient of 2x72 grinder.
I still use my two 2x42 grinders for over 40% or more , hogging off, profiling, refining, scale work, shaping & sharpening etc.
Youll get your moneys worth bud, without breaking the bank. and they weigh about 16-20 lbs. tops , easy to move. I keep one with the platen set up, and one as a slack for hogging/profiling.
