Has anyone used Belian Iron wood?

I bought this at an exotic wood offcut place. It was labelled as iron wood, which after further research it is, but from borneo (I think), and they use it for decking! I bought it for £76 and they cut the big chunk in half for me.

This is it with a splash of water on it. Is it any good for handles?

Borneo? Ain't that the place you gotta walk through a wardrobe to get to? Thought it was mostly pine trees in them there hills. :D

Also - those are some big pieces of wood. The handle on whatever knife that goes on must be MASSIVE.

Looks like Ipe. Dense hardwood from Brazil used for decking.
52 Ford is right ..... That is gotta be a BIG knife.

Spoon instead?

Looked it up... under £5 for 12 inches at 3 inches wide. Did I get a bad deal? https://ipewoods.com/product/1-x-4-eased-edge-ipe-random-lengths/

Is it decent for handles? ('ll cut it down to size ;)
You ever seen one of those giant Swiss Army Knife displays? Make THAT, but with real blades. Instead of carrying it in a pocket, you can but shoulder straps on it and wear it on your back.

Instead of built in scissors, theyd be built in hedge clippers.

Then you can go around saying "That's not a knife, THIS is a knife!".

Edit: stole the picture from the interwebs...

I'm a sucker for a offcut wood shop. Anything unusual I snap it up. I'm sure I'll use it. Most likely for handles for my hand made forging tools. But naturally high resin red wood, has got to be useful for a colour option. At the price I bought it for, it'll make a lot of handles and spacers pretty cheaply. I got a load of walnut from the same place, not super fancy grain, (not burl) but still decent for a good price. I also went skip diving (with permission) at a local furniture makers, and got some cocobolo and more walnut, and the steel fabricators gave me a load of 304 stainless for free.

I think... I'm becoming a knife materials horder.... I just wanted to get some large chunks of wood instead of buying very expensive individual blanks from knife specialist shops. I can stabilize wood and the wood cost about the same as three small pro knife blanks. The below picture is all my elmax, AEB-L and knife handle pre-supplies I've bought from https://www.brisa.fi/ prep for when my workshop is done. I maybe should avoid online shopping for a whle till I can actually make something! (and know what the hell I am buying)

It'll keep growing...wood blocks are like a drug addiction. you'll keep buying more whether you need them or not. :D
It's bad... I have one bit of zebrano.. and I'm thinking "hmmm I should have at least 6 bits so I could make a whole cutlery knife set from it"... As addictions go.. not the worst right?

Your knives are gorgeous by the way. And yes... those handles... wowzers :)

Blocks are one thing... I save whole trees.

I built a sawmill a while back.

Even rotten wood. If you catch it at the right time, that stuff can be beautiful.
