Has anyone tried a Carbide faced filing guide?

I think you're right about the spring temper or maybe just a little harder so it cant quite flex and pop off the carbides. Another friend made one here and used real flimsy steel and one carbide broke just from slightly overtightening it. His carbide was thin too so that may have contributed. My Finnigan doesnt flex at all because its made from 1/2" x 5/8" stock. Nice and stout. I think stainless screws are the way to go too because mine are rusty from cooling.
If I could make a suggestion don't harden to full hardness. The idea behind hardening a piece like that is to give a little spring tension. The one I made is made from a simple steel and it only attained the slightest of hardening in the heat to bend and subsequent quench.
Too hard and you get a broken file guide. The one I mentioned I using was tightened down and it was the transition once the blade had a little heat to the water cool down bucket I use that snapped it. The carbide strips work they will allow you to bump the belt without damage to file guide itself!

Real nice guide by the way!

I have it as well and used it on the grinder. It didnt work out well the grinder eventually ground into it.(And yes it had the carbide face) I suggest simply using the Files.

There is a belt and a stone that can grind carbide. I believe its silcone carbide belts and the green bench grinder stone. I have niether here. Diamond files will damage it. I surface carbide with a diamond wheel. Most all belts and bench grinder stones wont touch it.

well maybe I need to get a return on my guide. I was using the blaze 36 grit belt followed by an 80 grit and it cut into the guide after several uses.

I wonder if the Blaze belts are mean enough to dig in to carbide? Do you have a picture of your guide?
