Handle sandpaper?

Ok. I will do rough handle shaping on the grinder but most of it I’ll do by hand at least for now. Is the normal hardware store AO sandpaper good enough quality for handles or do I need to get better quality AO sandpaper? Mainly wood scales for now. I know with the cheaper sandpaper the grit size is kind of all over the place but I don’t know if it matters as much with wood? I’m still stuck in steel mode. Lol
 
In the past I’ve just used cheap hardware store AO sandpaper for handles but now I’m trying to do it right.
 
I use Rhynowet for everything. If you’re looking for something to use this weekend then I’d go to the box stores or an automotive parts store and buy 3M Wet / Dry. Any good paper will sand wood but you also have the tang and pins to consider. In my opinion even the wood benefits from using good, uniform paper because the finish you get is largely based on the smoothness of the wood surface.

Ok thanks! Just bought some rhynowet the other day but was planning on saving that for handsanding the blade but I’ll just use it for everything.
 
I get wood working sand paper from Wood Crafters Supply it’s good paper and it saves the Rhynowet for the blades.
 
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I bought a couple 1" x 42" belts years ago at Horrible Freight, popped one on the machine and it promptly snapped in about ten seconds.
I just looked at it and thought........WHAT was I thinking, to the trash they went. they were cheap...and I got my money's worth ! - in the form of a lesson learned! Ha ha.
Horrible Freight is not a good place to buy abrasives.
 
I used to use Black Ice from Norton but switched to Rhynowet after Keith Johnson told me about it. Use with water or light oil.
 
For those that haven't read this....I think this guy has a box full of Horrible Freight sandpaper in his shop....and probably thinks the same of it ! :D

As I'm typing this, somewhere nearby is a transmission jack that I own. There's also a mini tire changer and a portable wheel balancer and a five-ton gear puller. Five tons! That's a frigload of tons!

I've been using Rhynowet in the higher grits. However I have been using 220 grit Gator sandpaper from Lowes for rough finishing. It seems to work OK. But I will probably switch to Rhynowet in 220 though the next time I order. Just seems I'm always running out of 220 at the most inopportune moments.
 
After the rough in on the grinder I use 1×40 klingspore torn to length and shoe shine it, then go to 3m for final.

I've never looked for 1x40 belts before. Kingsport is a very good abrasive. If you looked around I bet you could find it in a bulk roll and save some money over belts.

Never thought of that, sounds like an excellent idea!
 
My two go to sheet abrasives are Rhynowet and Starcke/Matador. If you buy them 25 to 50 sheets per grit at a time (or more), they're about the same price as the 3m and similar that you'd buy at the big box stores.

Are they better than the cheap paper? Absolutely. Are they better than the "premium" 3m paper you can get at the big box store? Hard to say if there's a huge difference. I doubt you're handles will look twice as good or anything, but it is good paper.
