Groover Techniques

Guys, please offer some advice how to properly use a groover. Each time I've tried to use mine I've made a real mess. The "blade" just wants to gouge in the leather or not cut at all. I've even gotten a couple new blades and still the same problems. I can use an edger and an awl just fine, but this groover is killin' me!

What angle do you hold the tool in relation to the leather?

Do you make a singe pass, or kinda scratch at the leather to make the groove?

Thanks

First, make sure you have a good smooth edge to work from, then slightly dampen your leather. I hold it about 30-45 degree's and and pull evenly.I do it once or twice.Dave:)

Blackcatt,

When I first got my groover, it was dull so I had to stone it and then strop it before it would work very well at all. Leather tools that are supposed to cut really need to be sharp and well stropped.

Sharp tools make all the difference, also, I learned to make sheaths from a saddlemaker. He told me to moisten your leather before you do anything to it.
