Grinding a bevel with a guide question.

Hoping somebody could clear this up for me.
I want to make a bevel guide something like this one.
I can see how it would make a clean grind on a long straight edge but how does it follow edges that arent straight ? Like the example blade in the picture.
It doesn't quite make sense to me.

That's the major drawback that I have seen/experienced with any type of grinding jig. They work well for a few very specific blade profiles, but also limit an individual to those specific profiles. Most people think I'm dead set against grinding jigs....but that's not the case. What I am against is the way most of them handicap/limit the user.

I always encourage individuals to learn "freehand" grinding, and although a grinding jig might give you that "immediate gratification"....... learning to freehand grind will give you a lifetime of gratification.

The jigs can still work on recurves and compound shapes to an extent, you just need to use the corner of the belt or a narrow belt that can fit into the radius. Of course, angling the blade against the corner of the belt will change your angle some, so you will need to compensate some.

As Ed pointed out, freehand bevels gives you the best chance all around once you become proficient.

I prefer to develop the skill without a jig but I can see where one would help with a recurve grind, something I tend to fiddle around with.
