the first "semi-production" knife I have been working on...for months now(though in all fairness I have been sneaking custom stuff through the shop)....is 6.5 inches long with a 2.7 blade length. Its small and originally I was making them 3/32 thick. It was more than strong enough and made a beauty slicer. On a whim I went up to 1/8 and the look is amazing. It now looks like serious little work horse. Stiffer and is not really much heavier...in fact the little added weight is a plus I think.
I also quit pre grinding before heat treat...not for scratches, etc. I just can't believe that having a blade in a ht furnace that goes from .02 to .125 thickness is not a trickier HT than a blade that is .125 all over. The blade grinds slower after ht which is a good thing for me...lol. I will have to build some kind of jig at the grinder because I will probably never be fast enough to make a penny at this. But for now freehand is teach me a lot.
The discipline of having to make one design over and over is helping me refine the look. I am starting to really enjoy the thought of selling some. When that day comes I will post pics...
some of what you guys have shared in this thread have confirmed my trial and error...nice peace of mind..thanks guys.
