Golden ratio

Using the 3 to 5 proportion works well in many situations, but not all. It may work well when choosing a length for a swedge on a bowie, but it wont work as well in choosing the length for the handle relative to the blade, on the same knife. I've found that it is best applied when you are working in one area of a knife, but not the complete knife. Such as the guard proportions, the butt cap or handle proportions, the relative position of pins to each other.
The golden ratio is the most visually appealing to human eyes; such as the shape of the common playing card. But don't use it as a rule of thumb when designing a knife, use your own seance of appeal.
