So has anyone tried this stuff for etching Damascus? I have a couple people on my area that use it and swear by it! Ive always used Ferric and then added the Instant coffee after I get decent results but not consistent? The guys in my area that use it tell me their results are consistent and it's easy to use! I'm just trying to justify buying another 60 dollars worth of another liquid!!

I'd sure be interested to see the ingredients - perhaps it's just premixed FeCl? Maybe somebody has used it and will chime in.

I just looked it up and apparently it has a base of hydrochloric acid and FeCH added. Apparently it works great I just didn't wanna spend $60+ on a gallon until I am sure it works good haha

EXACTLY!! Ferric is Hydrochloric Acid Light!! LOL!!

This is the label. No percentages but the Hydrochloric acid is the smallest amount if the ingredients work like food ingredient labels?

How do you dispose of it once it's exhausted? Not exposing to the environment seems to rule out pouring down the sink so do I have to take it to a designated disposal center. Where I'm at our center doesn't run all the time. I'm also not sure of the cost associated with the disposal.

You can neutralize it with something like baking soda and then pour it down the drain.

We have tested it here at USAknifemaker and it worked great on traditional 1095/15N20 Damascus as well as on a piece a of stainless damascus I believe the alloy was AEB-L and 300 series that was being using for a ring.

I just tried it and it works great! I went to 2000 grit handrub on these 2 and after a 5 or so minute etch, it had great contrast and still a polished blade surface, just darker carbon steel. I did a few 5-8 min etch cycles, cleaning up with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper between each until I could just feel the layers. Less fuss than straight FeCL and gives a nicer look. It's expensive, but saves a lot of time and headaches.
