frame handle material ?

What steel do you use for your frames when making a frame handle? I was thinking of using 416 but have not been able to find 1/2" thick 416 flat stock. Is using cold rolled or hot rolled steel acceptable or a good idea?

McMaster also carries 416 1/2" 12x12 sheets. Pretty pricey though.

I buy 416 from Tracy but I didn't know he has it 1/2" thick. I buy 1/4" thick stock from him. He has the best price too. Mild steel works fine but there is a chance of rust.
