This knife belonged to my Father-in-Law. I don't know anything about it. Can anyone give me some information on it? It has "Pattent 390224" engraved at the base of the blade, just above the guard.

I don't know if this will help or not. It looks like a folding bowie made by several German firms in the past except in dagger form. Alot of them had english language written/engraved on them, probably for export or visiting Americans or English. Maybe some firm here in America decided to use the idea and patented it?

Hubertus made a similar auto called the “Saufaenger” or “pig sticker.”

No records are available for that patent number.

Hope you can find its provenance…

I don't think it's an auto. Rather a folding with blade exposed partially when folded and then extended when open. Hubertus did make these sort of knives as well as Anton Wingen Jr., Edgebrand and others. Seems to be a particular sort of german design. They do sell for between 2-3+ hundred dollars. This one seems to have jigged bone handles from what I can see which Makes me think it's American or English made. It's definately a keeper.
