Tried my hand at a little forge welding today, I figured I could make one of those without a grinder. I think I got some scale between the two halves of the rasp after I brushed them and folded them over, weld didn’t stick, tomorrow I’ll try to open it up, clean it out and try to weld it again. Yeah, I fluxed it and had a nice glassy shine around all the edges. Maybe I could have gotten it just a smidge hotter too

If you want you can clean everything up and heat the eye section just enough to close the section you want to forge weld. Then weld the edges enough to hold it together with a conventional welder then do your forge weld. If the surfaces you want to weld are already touching then you will have less chance for scale to form. Unless you completely weld things shut I would still use some flux on the edges.

I think it depends on if it was naturally red.... synthetic RCH tend to be thicker...

After a little forging and grinding its coming along. Looking forward to the next one already, with what I have learned I am hoping to knock the next one out of the park. FYI This is one of the first 10 things I have forged with a purpose so there is tons of learning going on still. ADDICTED!
