Etching Makers Mark Problem

I need some advice....

I have been using a home made etcher similar to the one with the arcade button on usaknifemaker with a q-tip as my pad. I find that I can not for the life of me have a deep etch with black lettering. I can etch a little deep but not much but when I try to make it black with the etcher it just wipes off. Or I can just have black lettering with no deep relief of the etch.

You guys have any good advice?

thanks,

Brian

Use a flat even pad instead of the Q-tip. I myself have not had good results using the Q-tips and started using the Wand pad that came with my machine again. I get nice even deep cuts again and the Q-tips we harder on the stencils.

A large part (not all) Deep etching comes from bristles that stick through the stencil. A Q tip doesn't have those fibers like a deep etch pad designed for deep etching does.
The other issue could be polarity. Have you changed the leads around and tested that?

I have tested the polarity and that is not it.

I guess the question now is how do I get a deep etching pad that will work with my home made machine?

that I don't know. I have never seen your machine so I can't help much there.
