Empire Fire Brick

I am going to build a new forge and wanted to ask if anyone has used Empire fire brick in forge construction. I have an abundance of these brick measuring 9x4 1/2x18 . we used them in our pottery kilns as floor brick , they were made by AP Green and have a 3000 degree rating. They are very tough.IMG_2139.JPG

I have thought on more than one occasion about using those bricks for a forge body and lining the inside with 2" of Kaowool (or better stuff) and rigidizer.

If there hard brick they take forever to get up to temp! You can use them but better have a big propane tank!

Floors are about the only thing they'd be good for. They will have relatively little insulating value, which will make for a pretty inefficient forge.

Well it looks like floors only , I am thinking of building a forge similar to Ed's build with an excess air burner . I will be headed to the scrap yard for the shell material and shopping for some Mizzou for casting the liner.

Check out the Build a Gas Forge and the Ribbon Burner attachments on the Forge Supplies page at

I recommend casting the floor and only using fire brick for closing down the ends. Kast-0-Lite is a light weight, insulating castable refractory.
Let me know if I can help you.
