I used a powerful variable speed drill chucked up into a vise with a 4 inch wheel initially. Works fine for wood and for small bits of metal. But even a small "buffer' like that will trying and hurt you. LOL Something that I was told about blades is that you can "buff" on a 2 x 72 using cork belts that have been "dulled" by using the sharp edge of a steel bar. Once the are smooth enough, you load them up with compound and rock out. That technique allegedly came from Steve Johnson.
