disk grinder info???

OK, to continue the questions from the other thread. Right now I'm just gathering knowledge on disk grinders. I just finished a 9" disk grinder with fixed speed with a 120 VAC, 1 hp 1725 RPM motor. It's vertical, but maybe this horizontal mount would be better. I can tell for a lot of things I'd like to use this disk for, 1725 seems too fast. This will have me looking for a different motor that I can put a variable speed controller on, either cheap (my middle name) DC, or 3-phase motor. That was what triggered my question about minimum hp of motor. Since I'll be looking for used, never can tell what I'd find, and sure would hate to pass on a 1/2 hp (or less???) thinking I needed a big motor.

Fred, on your vertical mount - the red material spacer that shows between the motor and the flat plate the motor is bolted to - is that a rubber material to reduce vibration for a quieter setup?

I wouldn't plan on using the disk for "hogging", but for light duty finishing type work.

just curious, why 9" disc? why not 6" or 8"? 6" and 8" are available in flat or concave and have many more manufacturers of plain and psa discs. just a curious old sailor.

Well, it's 9" because that "seemed" to be a pretty standard size used by knife makers. As Garry says, it's pretty easy to make the sanding disk from standard sandpaper. So, that's what I made. I just ordered a 9" round aluminum 1/2" thick, chucked in lathe and turned it out. Put the 1º taper on the front. Seems to work pretty good the little I've used it. Just finished a week ago, and have not ground any blades yet. I've got two blades to profile today for the wife so I'll get to use it some this week.
