Dewcarta hidden tang WIP (handle only)...

While moving into the new shop I found a knife I had started over eight months ago. It is just crying to be finished in a different way. Dewcarta to the rescue!!!



Hollowing the area for the tang. (First time I've tried this)



Checking the fit. I'm using a dremel tool to carve out the channel. No photos of the carving as I need both hands to do this.



Both sides channeled.



Sanding them flat.



G10 center insert. I will continue tomorrow on this new journey.

Got the grand kids for a couple of days. So only wooden knives till they leave. School starts on Monday. They are great assistants and ask lots of questions, especially when can I forge a knife. "You know I turned 5 and I'm a big boy now!" LOL

Got to the shop late but, I did get to epoxy one side of the handle and the center liner in place. It should be dry by tomorrow.

Drilled pin hole and epoxied the second half of the handle. Need to let it dry for 24 hours.

George,
Great job so far.
If I can make a suggestion, and you may already be doing this, I would put a row of small diameter pins around the perimeter. Maybe 4 above and 4 below the tang.

Or... use a Corby bolt for the single tang pin. On a one piece hidden tang, the single pin will anchor the handle if the knife is dropped. With split scales the seam may pop if dropped. The Corby will help hold the scales together.

Just a thought.

Steve Corbies are a great idea. I got some micros a couple of trips ago while in Georgia. One of those would fit my 1/8" hole in the tang. Now I know why I got them. Thank you!!!

you too? There's nothing better than moving along a good clip and then the universe grinds to a halt as blisters form and you just can't seem to get that last little spot just right....man those are good times!
