Devin Thomas Calling It Quits For Damascus

Reasons of health. Chris, I don't know how to link, bladeforums, knifemakers shop talk section.

Hate to hear that. I've known Devin for a lot of years, and he's dealt with health issue for as long as I've known him.

Prayers for Devin!

What is it about knifemaking and health issues? I know a lot of peeps doing this (myself included), that probably shouldn't be doing this due to reasons of health.
My mentor lost his battle to COPD at a too-young age, and I am flowing along down that same path.

Dan.... Knifemaking is at least partially to blame for the condition of my lungs. Back in 2009, when they did the first lung biopsy on me, they identified "iron", "calcium" (which they linked to fossil ivories), and "synthetics" (which they linked to micarta, G10, etc) in the biopsies.
The Docs are still not 100% certain of all the causes of my lung issues....but next month I will be going to Seattle (University of Washington) for another surgical lung biopsy, in an attempt to determine what's going on, and hopefully decide on a treatment.

This bout started in Sept of last year.... I was teaching a class, and had a slight cough....that got worse during that week, and the following week was so bad I couldn't speak without hacking...... even with my history of lung issues, it took a month for the Docs to realize antibiotics did no good.....and do a CT scan. I'm now looking at some type of autoimmune issues, but the question is whether that is causing my lung problems, or are the lung problems a separate issue?

Long story short, when we're youngsters, we believe we are "bulletproof".... but that's certainly NOT the case....and it manifests itself later in life.... so we need to jump on our soapbox at every opportunity with the young folks about protecting themselves from the hazards of what we do.

Boy isn't that the truth! Gives rise to the saying "If I knew I was going to live this long I'd took better care of myself". I've got minor COPD and use an inhaler on a as needed basis. I expect most of it came from grinding fiberglass and some painting without any real PPE. That was back when I was "Young, Dumb, and full of C*m" type thing. Now I'm just "Old and a little smarter". {g}
