Much, much better. Way to go. I'm also impressed with how well you can take suggestions from other people. Some people have trouble with that.

Thanks Mark. I appreciate the suggestions and they don't bother me at all. Once I know all there is to know about knife making I might get upset with them. :D
 
Making some progress on the handle and fittings this weekend. I did all the contouring with a rasp and sandpaper. I usually do most of this on the grinder but wanted to keep a specific shape and figured slower was better. I drew a lot of layout lines on the handle so I could keep everything even.





I spent a couple hours finishing the fittings. I'm pretty pleased with how they came out for the first time doing this.

The idea of the spacer in the middle with the notches sits the whole thing off!! I have been working on that idea for a while but laying it out and keeping everything straight and even is what really makes it look so good.

Is there a trick to that or is it just like everything else? Practice practice practice! I have attempted such in the past and either I need a bigger scrap bucket or more practice!!! :D
 
The spacers are quilted maple that has been dyed black and stabilized. I was hoping they would come out pure black, but I like this look too. I think they would look real good with wrought iron.

The center spacer was done with a checkering file then I rounded the edges over with 400 grit sandpaper. On the outside spacers, I used the mandrel for a dremel tool in the drill press with 2 cutting wheels on it to cut a starting groove in them. Then I scribed a line around them .065" in on each edge with calipers. I used a 5/32" round file to file the groove in between the scribe lines, then rounded the edges over.

Thanks for that explanation Gene. Sure saves us newbies a ton of experimentation.
 
DANG!! And I was happy to get the Nickel guard on the knife I'm working on fit nice and tight!! Very nice Gene!! I will say the knife I'm working on is going to be using a piece of Burl I got from you!!
 
I was able to get this one finished up last night. All that is left is sharpening. It was getting dark when I took these pictures, so I had to edit them some. I'm going to get better ones tomorrow and will post them.

I have to give thanks to those here who made suggestions on this build and to all those on this forum and the knife making community who are so giving of their knowledge and expertise. When I started this venture almost 3 years ago, I could only dream of making a knife like this. Without that help and knowledge, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this goal. Thank You!
