Cowboy kitchen utility knife in the forge WIP...

TacticallySharp

KNIFE MAKER
I need to make a knife to meet export criteria. No more than 12 cm (4.7") cutting edge. Must be a non weapon; ie kitchen culinary, work tool, butter knife. NO it's not going to California, its head to the EU.

Aldo's 1084 forged to basic shape with bevels.

Thank you Dogs!

Just got the call to drive up to the Cape. No fun for a couple of days. Will continue as soon as I get back.

Laurence,

I just had a call from a guy in NYC. He told me about their Administrative Code on knives. You are right about California, but neither you or I could work NYC much less live there with their rules.

George

Living in Florida is a lot better than most folks think!

What's wrong with this picture? It happens when you are working late and it said to me "Time for bed"

Working on scales before heat treat...

Back out of town will continue when I get back...

George,
The knife is looking good! If we weren't established here in her job and my biz, My wife and I would be looking at Florida, La, or Tx. Ocean and more freedoms.

Keep the build pictures coming.

Laurence,

I know the feeling. My wife has been a Commercial Realtor for nearly 40 years here. That and our grand kids keeps us from moving to the mountains of NC which we both love.

Well I got to quench it before leaving. Quenched a few more for an upcoming show. They are my blacksmith rustic carry (BRC). Based on a knife I learned to make by Jason Knight, MS. Just a little bit more rustic and a lot smaller.

Yes just got it back from heat treat. I have a family member in the hospital and will start working on knives again on Monday. God willing.

edit:

I did not get the hardening correct on the first try in house and anealed then normalized the blade and sent it out. I tested the blade with a file this evening. I will need to draw the spine back and then continue with the process.

Well I got the blade done and etched.

Here's some wood with G10 white liners and 1/4" brass hardware.

Epoxy should be dry by mid afternoon tomorrow. As you can see I work outdoors on the porch. If I get lucky and no rain I will get to work on it then...

I can't wait to send it to you. I'm trying to give it an aged and old look. Kind of like an antique knife but made with modern materials. The wood is American Cherry and trim 360 brass. Forced patina on the steel. The steel is Aldo's 1084. I forged it at 1500*F to start and reduced to 1350 for the remaining heats. 2x quench with 3x tempering cycles. Then drew back the spine twice. Polished and etched followed with 5 bluing coats and the polished the bluing for that aged look. This one has been fun so far!
