Mark, do yourself a gigantic favor and grab yourself one of these.
Or your local welding supply store.
I'd also suggest picking up a (or 2) 1-2-3 blocks and/or a machinist square.
I use mine to make sure my platen/rest is square (almost) every time I adjust them.

Heck, while you're at it, you might want to look into a new Nimba Centurion, a Rockwell tester, forging press, and new shop on 20 acres so you won't have to worry about bothering your neighbors....:cool::p
 
Mark, do yourself a gigantic favor and grab yourself one of these. It’s a wire gauge with measurements in thousandths. This is the greatest tool since sliced bread for checking your edge thickness. Completely removes the guess work and will show you where your thickness varies along the edge.
