Carbon addition question

A question was brought to me, and I have no other reference with which to answer.

If you were to add “pure carbon” to a can preparation, would it have any affect on the resulting steel? Like mix it in with the powdered metal?

Vague? I know. I’m not really looking for a specific result just a what if?
 
Wouldn't that be something like how blister steel was made where the iron bars were sealed in crucibles with a carbon source and then cooked in an oven for several hours?
