I probably won't be ready to do this anytime in the near future but. Could you use a round pipe for the canister instead of a square tube?? I don't even know why I would ask this other than this process is fascinating to me. I keep watching YouTube and every vid pertaining to this subject.
 
You can, but the success rate, and quality of the end product is far better if you use square. Generally, in order to make the pattern work out correctly, it's going to be forged into a square anyway. Using a square "can" gives you more control/less pattern distortion.

That being said, I have had several specialty orders where the client wanted the pattern in a round finished piece/showing on the ends...in those cases I did start with a round "can". Rounding dies in a press or power hammer are pretty much essential to make it work.
