Calling the resin casters!

Well I am moving from stabilising to casting my own blanks, be they fully resin or hybrid blanks. Trouble is I am getting conflicting advise regards which resins to use.

So I am sure there will be some who cast here and wondered what folk use. I imagine many will use Alumilite which I can get in the UK but I am told other resins might be as good or better. I think my choices will be Acrylic or Polyester as Polyurethane I believe is moisture sensitive and a tad nasty on the vapour side?

I will be buying a pressure pot and stabilising all my wood first so it is just a case of finding a suitable resin.

So gents what do you prefer please?

Thanks in advance.

So I have been bragging about the West System epoxies!! Take a look at this thread! https://knifedogs.com/threads/west-system-epoxies.50466/

Then go to this link! https://www.epoxyworks.com/index.php/using-a-quick-mold/
At the bottom of each page is a link to move forward and backward. The second article is all about casting!

Well I use West System epoxy for gluing scales....awesome stuff. So I they have other products which might suit my needs I will give them a look at.

Thanks.

The casting I want to do is for hybrid blanks as I have loads of stabilised wooden burl blocks and offcuts which would only go to waste if not. I also want to do some of my own solid blocks which I can then cut up for scales. Obviously I want to tough resin ,chip proof, easy to work and will take a nice finish.

Cheers

I’ve done a decent amount of casting but have just used alumilite clear resins. Haven’t tried others. So guess I’m not much help, lol

I went to a supplier the other day and saw Alumilite which they say they like, though they had many more so mind blowing. But I think I will give the Alumilite a go soon. I cam back with a lighter wallet as bought a pressure pot and yet more resin colours :)
