Building a new press, QUIET PLEASE

Bob Warner

Does anyone know of a hydraulic pump that is quiet?

I am preparing to build a new press and am scrounging materials. I am looking to find a pump that does not SCREAM like the last one I had and like many others I have seen in operation.

I hope to find an 11 GPM or higher two stage but may settle for whatever I can get.

If anyone here has one they are not using, is there something you need we could trade for?

I am trying to build this press from nothing but my own scrap metal and hydraulic stuff. I have a complete unit that has a 6" cylinder but it is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. I need to boost it up a bit.

If you know of one, please advise where to get it, part numbers or other information.

Thanks,

Bob

The following is a parts listing on the press that I built.
The noise on mine is mostly coming from the Lovejoy coupling. I shim up the motor and pump with shingles to make a better alignment between the two.
PARTS LISTING
SUPPLIER PART# DESCRIPTION COMMENTS
NORTHERN 1053-C161 BARNES 2 STAGE PUMP -11GPM
2010-C161 PRINCE STANDARD 4-WAY CONTROL VALVE
4051-C161 7 GALLONS HYDRAULIC OIL TANK MUST CLEAN THE INSIDE WELL
4022-C161 RETURN LINE FILTER
4010-C161 SUCTION STRAINER THIS GOES INTO THE TANK
FITTINGS AND HOSES YOU WILL NEED 3 HI- PRESSURE HOSES AND LOW PRESSURE HOSE FOR THE RETURN.
53606-C161 GLYCERIN FILLED GAUGE 0-3000PSI
SURPLUS CENTER 10-1485 ELECTRIC MOTOR I USE A 3 HP AT 3250 RPMS
09 4954 HYDRAULIC CYLINDER I USE A 4 1/2" BORE X 8" STROKE WITH THE PUMP AND MOTOR SHOULD BE GENERATING 24 TONS
If I had to do it again I would go with a 5" minimum cylinder and a H frame.

Come on Anthony, I don't have that much steel laying around. :)

Wait until you come out next time, You will see the main beams for the press. They will be a bit overkill but that is how I tend to do things. Could probably run a couple of 6" cylinders when it is done.

I got to get out there and get that small peice of steel , Man that lesson sure helped out
I decided to do a flat grind the other night and used the stuff you showed me and I impressed myself a little.

That piece is here when you want it.

Glad the time you spent in my shop helped your grinding. We accomplished our goal if you are impressing yourself now.
