Buffer Transference

Greetings,

Quick question on buffing the spine of my knives. I typically like to get the spine with a mirror finish. Looks nice but the problem is with lighter color wood, such as hickory, I get transference from the buffing compound on the wood and darkens it, does not seem to come out. Not sure if this can be avoided or how to avoid it. Using a simple cotton buffing wheel with whit compound.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

try white compound on a dedicated wheel....it works for me......lots of compound and lighter pressure

I do the finish on all my exposed metal before I assemble the knife except final sharpening. I don't forge but buy blanks and refurbish old cutlery and other old blades. On the old stuff, if I can take everything down to just metal without damaging other componets I always do. It makes dealing with the metal alot easier for me.
Blanks sometimes don't have the finish I want so I change it before final assembly. I find its easier to avoid damage to the metal than to the handle/scale material for me. I either finish the scales or have them to my final grit before final assembly. A little touch-up from me for not paying enough attention here and there.........................
Just how I do it...........
Food for thought....................
