Bowie Sketch - Suggestions/Help

I was waiting for my wife to get ready before we headed out for some errands and the Bowie build has been occupying my mind so I thought I'd sketch one out this morning. What do you guys think? I'd like to do a full tang knife with Hamon - maybe 1075. Please weigh in with a critical eye and suggestions on this sketch. Right off I'm thinking the guard is too thick. I have some nice Ringed Gidgee I'm thinking about for the handle or perhaps curly Koa.

To my eye, I agree the guard is a hair too thick. I think you have a very pretty design as is. Possibly more OP with a guard than a Bowie. That’s why I’m wondering if thinning and straightening the ricasso might not push it into a more traditional Bowie with OP flavor. Then bring the handle line up to the ricasso line at the guard but keeping that beautiful sculpting past that.

To me, what sets a Bowie apart is that square ricasso with a dropped edge and bold plunge lines. JMO

Personally, I'd make the guard much thinner. And I'd drop the handle a bit, especially towards the back. Try to carry the top and bottom lines of the ricasso through the guard and match the top/bottom lines on the front of the handle. It will have a nicer uninterrupted visual flow.

I also might drop the tip ever so slightly which would flatten the belly just a bit. And I'd make the clip a bit longer. These things will give the blade a leaner, more aggressive shape.

All of these suggestions are just personal preference and they're very minor, subtle changes. Your design looms pretty good and it is a solid foundation to build on.

Since so much of a design gleaned from those aspects many consider "personal tastes", I'll mention a couple of things that will either make the build "easier" or more difficult for you as the maker.
1. Full tang bowie with a guard. There are a number of ways to pull it off, but take careful consideration in the design, so it will help, rather than hinder installing a "slip on" guard. Without careful consideration, the bottom of the ricasso (in front of the guard), and the bottom of the handle (behind the guard) can look way out of alignment (the bottom of the ricasso and bottom of the handle should "flow" into each other, without juts or jags.).
2. Be thoughtful/cautious about how the "rolls" in the bottom of the handle are placed. Considering this is a somewhat shorter bowie, the apperance/flow would look significantly better if you shorten the front "roll" on the bottom of the handle, and lengthen the rear one. Basically making the front roll a "one finger" type/size, and the rear roll a "three finger" type/size. With a bowie of the this size, making those minor adjustments will generally give it a more "flowing" appearance, and make it feel better in the hand.

Don't be afraid to experiment a bit with the handle length. I wouldn't go any longer then 5", but with only a 7 3/8" blade, slight shorter then 5" may enhance how balanced it feels in the hand.

Finally, I agree with the others concerning guard thickness..... I've always found it surprising that just a slightly "chunky" guard can make the overall knife feel "clunky"...... Nobody every complains about a knife being "light and fast".... but most are quick to point out when one feels "heavy and/or clunky". ;)

Ok I'm looking at this design and I need a step down (?) from the front of the guard so there will be a flush fit up between the guard and the ricasso. Or I could fit the guard up and pin it in place. With a straight transition from the top and bottom of the ricasso looks like the guard will have to be pinned.

Ed makes a great point- having a full tang seriously complicates things with the guard. The slot in the guard has to be long enough to get over the handle. Put another way, your handle has to be designed around the fact that it has to fit through the guard slot.

Waking up in the middle of the night and running the design build through my mind a few times Im going to do a hidden tang on this one. I may try a slip guard on the next one.
