Black coating on tactical knives

How is this done? I posted about this over in the general forum, but nobody has answered. I figured some of you here may know. I've seen where someone was using Cerakote, but I was thinking it was some sort of phosphate type finish? What are the options for achieving this type of finish?

I've used phosphate Parkerizing for an almost black finish, but it only works on non-stainless materials. Cerakote is a nice treatment, but its still a "painted" finish. Both will produce a dark finish and both require extra equipment and procedures to acquire so its kind of a coin toss. All of the previously mentioned finishes are susceptible to scratching and wear. Hope this helps.

I used some gun blue to do a muzzle device I made for a rifle. I could not get it all the way black. It's close, but not black. Is this similar to phosphate Parkerizing?

A soak in vinegar will produce a nice flat black finish. I soaked a blade over a weekend and it looks pretty good. Just plain old white vinegar.....
