Well Ive finally gotten to the point that I need to restock my belt supply.

Im going to be working on some kitchen knoives so I will be grinding them after HT. Whats the best on the market these days for grinding HT steel? (Its been 4 yrs since Ive ordered belts!)

Read good things about the Trizac as well as the Gators just asking your folks opinions on what holds up the best and does the best job.

Thanks and God Bless

I've been using Trizac belts for years and am completely sold on them but they're not exactly hogging belts. I use 220 and 400 grit the most for blending my grinds but they don't have the bite a AO belt has , and they heat up quick if you're heavy handed. You'd probably be better off with Gators or a Blaze if doing heavy grinding.

My order of new belts just came in today. 4 years?? Were you out of the country?? How did you get 4 years worth of use out of your belts is what I want to know! lolol

I have been sold on 50 grit blaze orange belts for roughing. At the hammer in, Mike brought me a 50 grit 3-M Ceramic belt called a 967 Cubitron. And for hardened steel these thing ROCK!! Both are good high grade ceramic belts and will get r done!!

Have fun

Thanks guys.

Randy, life has happened, was on a project in Wisconsin for 3 years or so, and while I was away my shop was broken into and cleaned out. Im in the progress of retooling and getting things back in place slowly. I have been using the belts I had on hand since i hadnt been doing much. just finishing up a cpuple of forgings I had hidden in boxes of junk that didnt get taken.

Folks like you and your Son have really fanned a flame I have had for Chefs knives over the years. Im just scratching the surface on the Japanes style blades and will be working on trying to come up with hign perfomance blade that I can get into the field for some trials.

Im not use to working with such thin stock, but with the equipmemnt I have now Ill be doing stock removal for a bit. So grinding heat treated steel will be kind of new to me. Just wanting to get on the best foot I can and get the best belts for the application. Good performance with the least amount of heat build up.

Again I appreciate the advice.

Thanks and God Bless
Mike

Just wanted to add another vote for the norton Blaze Plus belts. They like to be ridden hard, so if you are a gentle grinder, keep a hard scrap around and lean into it a bit every now and then to 'freshen it up'. That only gets you to 120g. We've been using Norton 984 flexible ceramic bels to get to 220, but there's a new kid in town. Norton now has their Norax belts (structured abrasive) in ceramic in X200, X100 and X65 - about 80g, 150g and 220g and I'm really looking forward to trying those. Our Norton Rep is bringing some out and we'll spend an afternoon in the shop having fun.:happy:

Sorry to hear about your shop theft Mike. :2:

Rob!
