B day Tomahawk!

For my B Day this year I was blessed to be gifted a Craig Barr Damascus tomahawk head. It arrived in the mail this morning and Hunter and I wasted no time on getting started.

First we selected a board of feather pattern wood from the shop
. Which was destine to be firewood. But I saved it and its been sitting on the shelf for a few years waiting for THIS project. :) After cutting it to rough size. We started shaping.

As I was doing the final sanding on the handle, Hunter worked Sanding the head back to bare metal . and we etched it until it had a great look.

I applied a few coats of linseed oil finish to the wood. and managed to snap a few pictures of our progress.

It was a great gift. Im talking about the time spent with Hunter as much as I am the damascus tomahawk head. This one will get a few more coats of finish B4 I attach the head to the handle.

Ill post up a few more images when its completed.

As always, comments and or critiques welcomed.

Neat project! as it is I have 5-6 peices of my firewood set aside for future projects.

Im glad to have saves this piece form becoming a heat source. :) Beings my first and only tomahawk handle I have made. Im not sure that its gona preform as designed yet. Or if it will fail and break as its used. But I think its going to be OK.. I am not even sure what species it is. Just that it is a crotch piece that shows a nice feathered look!

Good luck with your firewood projects!

Thanks guys. This was a fun distraction! Hunter and I both really enjoyed the time spent in the shop. I hope it doesnt split like firewood when I wedge the haft to the head. ;)

Randy about time you did a hawk. Nice job but when I talked to Hunter he said he did most of the work. Your friend Terry KT :9:

Time well spent with Hunter!

I was gifted a couple good size chunks of curly maple that was destined to be firewood. Good looking hawk!
