I have a 20w fiber laser engraver and I'm not afraid to use it....As long as I'm wearing goggles that is.
The laser engraving can be darkened by slowing it down.I have a few patterns made and can sometimes use photographs.Any photo needs to be changed into black and white.So some photo's don't work well.My rate is variable.If you want a pattern I have average $20.00 a blade or if you have more than one $30.00 an hour.Something new designed than we would discuss price.My Laser working area is 8"X 8" www.lorne-sieben.combe knife 2.jpgfillet knife new no bolster.jpg

I have an idea for something that laser engraving may work for. will it work on brass? and how deep does it engrave into the metal? I have a new hermes engraveograph and would love to have a stencil to use on it with my name and logo made
 
Hi Noellaflamme,it does engrave brass and other metals but does not go really deep.I looked online at the plates for the engraver and am on the fence for whether I could engrave deep enough.
 
I can cut into steel about a 1/32 if I go over it a few times.Brass doesn't cut much at all.Can feel it with your fingernail but it doesn't cut deeper with more passes.It just turns black.
 
Ahh ok, I dont see why steel couldnt work too, but I'll have to see the depth the mark is, my guess was between 1/32 and 1/16
 
The stencils are usually either 1.25 or 2.75 tall, but that's whith the edges tsperd to fit in the slot,
 
I guess I would just need the thickness.I can shape size with my Knifemaking equipment.My laser can give me almost perfect lines to grind to.
 
The stencils seem to be 1/16 thick but thicker can work too, and I can put the bevels on the edges since i dont have the measurements for them, so it will be trial and error. What would you want for making a stencil?
 
Send me your name and logo and the size,I'll then have a ballpark figure.However I only want payment if it works.
 
Hi Tracy,it's a secondhand Chinese laser.Looked for a name on it but couldn't find one.Maybe inside the machine.
 
Those fiber lasers are very nice. You get an incredible amount of cutting ability for the Watt compared to a CO2 laser like I have. My 40W CO2 laser will not engrave metal. I do my makers mark with it by using a coating.

Having used my laser a bunch, I love it. But a fiber laser is definitely a big step up over a CO2 like I have.

I would imagine you would have to dial the power down very low. I see very low wattage fiber lasers engraving materials that I do with my 40W at 85% power
 
The last place I worked before retirement we had an Epilog Laser Engraver. I believe it was 30 watts. We used it to engrave steel name plates for pumps.

It was a very nice machine but I'm fairly sure it was some where in the neighborhood of $5K. It could engrave a name plate in under a minute.
