Any gunsmiths out there?

I have a question for any gunsmiths out there. I have a old CVA 1851 Colt Navy black powder kit that was given to me in rough shape and missing the instructions so I'm a little lost. I am trying to get the trigger assembly together and am having a little trouble.

I believe the part I'm having trouble with is called a hand spring assembly (part below)

My question is do I file down the little points till it fits in the little slots on the hammer like this?

Or do I depress the spring till it slides next to the hammer?

Hopefully this makes sense. I've shot lots of guns but haven't assembled them to this extent. If this is the wrong place to post this I'll delete it.

Not a gunsmith but this may help.

Follow this link, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt_1851_Navy_Revolver when it opens about halfway down the page you will see a schematic, right click on it and an exploded view of the pistol in parts, and you can download it.
Here is the link for the exploded view.

Hope that helps!!
