Another lesson learned

Ugh!

While shaping a handle I ground through the top of a corby bolt and into the threads.

I obviously didn't sink it enough. Crap.

Now I've got to cut the scales off and redo everything.

You better believe I'll be double and triple checking from now on.

And here's the funny thing.

While I'm on the portaband cutting the scales off (and running through every 4 letter word I know) my brother sends me this out of the blue.

That sucks man ... cool shirt though :pNewbie question ... what’s the upside of corby bolts vs brass rod?

Ahhhhhh….yup
done that a couple times myself.
Both times I had put some expensive ironwood on the knife.
If I have any doubt about it I'll grind the threaded parts of the corby a little shorter.
Really sucks, no?

I had a knife sent to me from the US to do some handle re-shaping. The scales were micarta so wern't glued on but they were round about an inch in diameter and felt like you were holding a broomstick. I really thought I might run into the same problem but even after grinding the handes down to about a 1/2 inch thick with heavily radiused corners, the corby bolts still held the scales solidly so whoever made the knife had set them very deep.

No problem with those "Loveless" bolts - that's what they're supposed to look like where you can see the screw in the nut.
