Short & sweet:

- H-style press
- 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.375" angle iron frame
- 1 x 4" cross members, ram & anvil reinforced to be 3" at die interface for additional surface area and 3" square die blanks for 90 degree utility
- 4" cylinder w/8" stroke
- 3 5 HP 1ph motor, 3600 RPM, 220V
- 11 16 gpm pump
- 18gpm open center, 1-spool, 4-way, auto-detent Prince valve
- 5 7 gal reservoir

This configuration should net me the following:

16 tons of force @ approx. 2550PSI, 3.37 3.8 IPS in high, 0.64 1.26 IPS in low

Is my head right on this? What am I missing? Thank you for any input and wisdom!

*Updated numbers to reflect accepted advice to up motor to 5hp

With your 3600 rpm motor I think you're in good shape. The control valve I don't know but it sounds good. By "auto detent" that means it returns to center position?

Since links are not allowed on the "other" forum, here's a couple Amazon links to 3600 rpm motors
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081J29Y6L/?th=1 - 3 hp for $173
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VVJVG3G/ - 5 hp for $200

That 5hp is tempting for my press

Thanks, Ken. This is the one I found:

I like that C-face so I can hard mount the pump to the motor with a Hydra-Mount. I think this is the smarter way, plus I think I can up my pump to a 16gpm and increase the ram speed without compromising torque with a 5hp.

Check out Gliden07's thread on his press build.

IIRC, his press frame is from similar angle iron stock.

52 Ford really did some good modeling on on that thread. I'll say "Thank You" again to him. The modeling work allowed me to better understand the stresses involved.

I thought it was a pretty fun project. I was still trying to get used to Fusion 360 and that helped a lot.
