A forging question

As I was thinking about forging and the steels to use it occurred to me that one would not forge Damascus , I would think that the forging process would deform the pattern, could someone with more experience then I chime in.

Deformed is in the eye of the beholder- maybe it would enhance the pattern, especially if it was a random grain. Now you got me curious. But sorry, I don't qualify as "experienced"as I have never tried it (yet). I have a pretty large piece of canister/roller chain damascus I brought home from the KnifeDogs hammer-in (Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make that possible!). Depending on the feedback you get here, maybe I should give that a try.

Try Jim Hrisoulas' book The Pattern-Welded Blade. Most of the patterns he shows are intended to be forged after welding. Now when you start talking about mosaic patterns with definite pictures and words in the steel then you would probably want to stick with stock removal to make a blade from them.
