5162??

Friend of mine went to a fellow knife maker thats getting out of the hobby. My friend bought a lot of steel from him. I was at my friends shop and he gave me a nice piece of 2"wide 1/4" thick steel. I asked him what it was for heat treating purposes, he told me it was 5162... you mean 5160 I said he said no 5162? I've never heard of it and can't seem to find any info on it? Anyone ever heard of this steel?? I'm at a loss right now.

I have an app on my phone that lists over a thousand different steels but doesn't show a 5162. I did a brief internet search as well...nothing.

Maybe he had two pieces. One was 5160, and the other was 5160 too....

Hmmmm..... First time in my career I've ever heard of that steel type. Personally, I think somebody, somewhere along the way, is either confused....or got some bad info.

Well it may have been sitting next to a piece of 80crv2 and the two carried over...So somewhere he has a piece of 80crv0. Good for you though thats a big piece of steel.

Looks like we will be doing some test coupons! Gonna treat it like 5160 and go from there!
