Ok, so there is a browning folder that i have that i broke the tip off of, is there anyone on the forum that would repair it for a good price? will get pics soon.
Ok, so my knife is ready to be heat treated, what do i have to do to heat treat with a primitive forge, i have motor oil to quench, oh and the steel is 5160, and it is around .25 thick on the spine.
Ok so a little intro, i have a 4 inch angle grinder, and a set of 2 files, Chainsaw, mill, and half round. I would like to get a grinder or a sander and i had acouple in mind and i need some opinions on them
First up
Grizzly Belt sander 1X30
$55+sh
Second
Grizzly Belt sander and disk...
I have been told that the edge of a knife needs to be no thinner than the edge of a dime at time of heat treat. Is this true?
And What is the cheapest way to start heat treating by my self?
Since i am new to knife making, is there a place that i can get small peices ( 12 in or less) of different steels for fairly cheap, Say, 01, 440,420, and 5160 ? to see which one i prefer for knifemaking?
Does any one have an estimate on the weight and shipping price of a 6 foot X 3 inches wide X .25 thick Billet of 5160?
That is the smallest one at mc master carr, and i wanted to know how much to save for shipping.
Ok, how can i make a forge for really cheap ( under 50$ with all supplies)
I really need one for heat treating, i would prefer propane but charcoal is ok too.
I have been making knives out of files, the grind in way. now since i have no way to heat treat the knife is always too soft. Also the edge is wavy. Are there ways to stop that from happening? Also should i get a different type of steel like 01 toolsteel, or 440 stainless? And should i stop...
