    Through tang fastener question

Thanks for the images. Looks much nicer with a cap or pommel on the end, think I'll stick with that method.

    Through tang fastener question

I've seen the pressed/pounded on handle method but would like a bit more security. My initial plan was to file out a pommel to a good fit over the tang and peen, until I saw that image I posted. Guess my big question about the ferrule method is how to prep the ferrule and tang. A round...

    Through tang fastener question

I have a few friends and family members that like to wood carve and I'm just spooling up on how to go about making a few knives for some of them. When I looked at the popular, among wood carvers, Mora carving knives I noticed the handle fastener on the rear end looks to be slid over the tang...

Proof that "Mr. Murphy" is alive and well!

I work field service on manufacturing equipment and tell my customers to schedule when parts break so I can pre order them. After 20 years they still won't listen!! ☺

    Outlet location in shop?

I like celling drops. You can coil up extra cable and wire tie it to keep it off the bench or floor, they are easier to move if you move a piece of equipment or an outlet didn't end up exactly where you want it and it just makes the wire mess much easier to deal with.

    Northridge belt grinder

We used to use protective boots on the shocks we had on equipment at work. That was 20 some years ago though and don't see much online for them. I'm sure something could be figured out to protect them from dust, old inner tube and a couple wire ties maybe? One advantage of gas shocks is they...

Finally going to delve into a big boy grinder

Agreed, it's gonna be a bear to compress. Not only a lack of leverage but it's going to be far back from the front of the work bench and hard to reach. I thought about doing something similar for my next build but also adding some linkage for a foot pedal release. Not sure it's worth the...

Finally going to delve into a big boy grinder

FYI wall e, if you buy a 110/220V motor it will be single phase and will not work with a VFD after you upgrade power.

What Calipers do you like? and what angle measurement tool to get?

Hard to beat the Mitutoyo tools. They are a reasonable value and built well. My calipers are over 20 years old, get used daily and have live in bounced around tool box in my trunk (or belly of a plane) for service calls. I have micrometer and dial gauges from them that take the punishment of...

CA coat for wood handle quesion

Days of work, Ed? That sounds excessive. I recently refinished my old beater fishing knife with CA and it took about 1.5-2 hours. This is and old beater that's going back in the belly of my boat for another 10 years and I left a couple pits/blemishes but, a customers knife wouldn't have...

    New Welding Forge WIP

Good idea with the cardboard form tubes. That's the part I was curious about. If the flat sides get stuck, a piece of pine might be better to burn than ply?

    Thoughts on

I only make a few knives a year and my 2 wheel Coot has been good enough for me for the last 12 or so years. Pros: It's built sturdy, small footprint for my small shop, tracks good, easy to modify the bits you might find to be bothersome. Cons: Work rests can get in the way and take a while...

    New Welding Forge WIP

Lookin' good Ed! Are you going to need to use forms for the walls or is the refractory thick enough to stick in place with thin layers?

VFD switch wiring... please check my work

I'm a bit late to the party but, FWIW. I ran a second line without GFI in my garage and put a couple outlets up in the rafters. I use cord drops for my grinder, table saw, welder, etc... Everything down at bench level is protected with GFI. I thought about using twist lock plugs on all my...

Where to send steel for test?

Thanks Ed. I have about 100lbs of this stuff set aside for myself already and probably close to 1000 lbs in my shop that still needs to be pulled of equipment. I think it'll be worth it to send out, especially since we have plenty more of these coming back. Scott, the bearings are very...

Where to send steel for test?

I work on automated manufacturing machinery and am currently scrapping out a bunch of 20-30 year old machines. The machines all have THK linear bearings and ball screws, some up to 15 foot in length with workable height and width dimensions. These are very high quality precision bearings. I...

    Top load/vertical kiln?

Thanks Samuri. I haven't seen one where the elements are in the lid. Do they have anything to help retain them from falling out? Laying a top load on its side was one of my first thoughts but was concerned the elements would fall from their grooves. I had totally rejected the idea of a top...

    Top load/vertical kiln?

Thanks for the input folks. Samuristuart, that's a good idea. Do you have any pictures of your modification? Did you cut the door at the bottom below the coils? One other idea might be to mount the whole thing upside down and have the lids drop away or the kiln pulled up on a pulley system. I...
