    Knife number 3

Well I'm using an iPhone and it was late in the day so the shadows were kind of long and annoying. Certainly not the best pics ever. Thanks for the compliments.

    Knife number 3

Here is my third. Specs: OAL: 7" Steel :1/8" 1084 with a hand rubbed oil finish to 600 grit. Handle: Corby bolted Kingwood sanded to 1200 grit with a simple Ren Wax finish. Red liners. Sheath: Carbon Fiber patterned Holstex, set up for small Tek Lok. This knife is darn near flawless...

    10" wheel for profiling?

Thanks. Temp by hands mostly, so very unscientific. I felt as though I needed more pressure and things heated up faster on the wheel than platen is all. My wheel is not serrated so that may be an issue.

    10" wheel for profiling?

Well I read that many knife makers use a wheel for profiling their blades. I tried it today on a 10" wheel. Aside from saving my platen and having an easier time on curves, I cannot say that I thought using the wheel was better at all. It was slower, heated up the steel faster and, of course...

    HF spindle sander?

I have a shop fox model I bought on Amazon for about the same price. I use it on every knife. It is fantastic for inside curves and aligning the scratch pattern on a full tang knife. I will say that the knocks against it in this thread are accurate. It is not great on metal (but works) and...

Profiling recommendations for a new guy

Hello Folks, I have profiled about 2 dozen blades now on a KMG grinder. I have been using the flat platen for everything - profiling and beveling. Right now I am enjoying learning to flat grind grind. It's coming along, but slowly...but coming along... Because I do not have a band saw...

    Drill press advice

Ed, Would you share specifically the bits you like and the place you might buy them from? I am seeing that there are certain bit sizes that are my "go to" sizes and they are wearing out quickly. To the OP, I have a Porter Cable floor standing press that I bought at Lowes. While it works fine...

Steel question for thoe with more experience than me (everyone :)

Thanks for the great replies. For now, I'm sending the steel out. When I move out of my basement I will consider my own heat treating.

Steel question for thoe with more experience than me (everyone :)

If I could paraphrase what I'm after, it would be "that steel that just works well every time and my customers like too." 440C is a terrific response and as I think about it, one of my very favorite blades ever is in that steel. I quickly became a knife "snob" and have tried numerous steels...

Steel question for thoe with more experience than me (everyone :)

So I finished a first blade in 1084. I found it easy to work and heat treat. I have also ground a number of knives in A2, but I have not treated them yet, so I am uncertain of how difficult they will be to grind after hardening. I'll know soon enough. My question is this: Is there a...

    First Knife. Please Critique!

Update with sheath. I took the sanding down a bit, back to 400 grit. I think I like that better. Sheath fits like a glove with snap in retention. Unfortunately I'm getting the typical micro scratches. Next time two layers of tape to provide more room, and I think that one or two or my rivets...

    First Knife. Please Critique!

I'll give you $5000 for your first....:9: It's funny because what I learned today was exactly what you posted. Up until finishing the handle, I really got used to thinking power tools are faster and better. After messing around with the finish on the micarta with the power tools, it just...
