    Advice from Plate Quenchers

Not enough time at temperature? CPM 154 will air cool, so you should get a hard blade even with no contact on your plate, but you should only get 1-2 points different between air or plate quench.

    etching solution

look at TUS Tech. They have quite a few specific electrolytes for different applications, they also provide recommended voltages for each. They work great. Very deep, very dark marks. http://www.tustech.com/admin/sites/default/files/Etching%20Knowledge%20Base_0.pdf

Surface grinder conversion contact wheel question

http://www.knifewerks.com/Tools/Surface_Grinder.htm The grinder has changed a little since I first made it. I bought a larger diameter tracking wheel from Travis Wuertz, and installed that. Shaft clamps can be bought from MSC for sub $70 to be used as the collar around the spindle, as that...

Surface grinder conversion contact wheel question

I do indeed run a belt like it was a stone. With the exception of depth of cut. I can very easily take .010" DOC with a belt, I could barely do 10% of that with a stone. That is the advantage of the belt over the stone, stock removal rate. And no heat. I took 6 blades down .020" in minutes the...

Wat size screws do you use??

No problem Ed, I was wondering about the taps, just Keiths! I've talked with several guys who keep snapping form taps, and it turns out, invariably that they are using too small a drill. We seem to be on opposite sides of the fence again on this one, as I most definitely prefer forming taps. I...

Wat size screws do you use??

I was wondering if Keith is using forming or cutting. Either way, the drill is too small for Titanium, but way too small if a forming tap.

Wat size screws do you use??

Are you using cutting taps, or forming taps? A 5/64" or # 47 are the go to drills for forming taps.

Ouch! What to safely cover blade with

Blue or green tape and acetone is all I use here when I don't want to scratch a blade. Usually don't need to protect myself from anything but the tip though... Lately I have just been using a Mineral oil and Coleman Fluid (white gas) mix to clean all my blades/handles. Cleans everything off...

Ouch! What to safely cover blade with

Why are you all working on sharpened knives? I can see the occasional instance where this would happen, but even most of those times you could safe the edge and re-sharpen.

    Anodizing Titanium ??

Depends on the temperature of the etchant. Heated, it goes quick, cold, not as quick. You will see it react. If it's virgin metal, and the etch is warm, it only takes a few seconds. I let it go 5 -10 seconds at a full stream of bubbles coming off the part. Then I dip in water to rinse, and into...

HELP?? I'm trying to grind American style Tanto.. any hints?

I run my bevels all the way off the tip, regardless of if it's a chisel or double grind. Then I come back and do the tips. I hold the knife so the tips edge is up and parallel to the ground, or square to the belt, and approach it that way. If it's a chisel grind, it just doesn't get any easier.

    Anodizing Titanium ??

Ok, so in the last few minutes, I've had an email, and a PM asking questions. I'll just answer here, since this is why they are asking. The solution I use is direct from Alan Folts, I take no credit. Get a pot simmering on the stove, and start disolving powdered cascade DISHWASHER detergent in...

    Hardness Testing

I need to learn how to write better. You expressed what I was trying to say much better than I did.

    Anodizing Titanium ??

The mult-etch is a mystery. No information on it that I can remember. I should request an MSDS. I've always suspected it to be similar to plating etchants. It will go to bubbling in short order when you put some ti in it, if it's warm. It will take the color right off in no time if you missed...

    Anodizing Titanium ??

I like the hook. I was silly and bought wire instead of using scrap. See if I do that again...

    Hardness Testing

Glad at least some of you thought I wasn't coming off poorly. Being a Toolmaker for years, it goes against my nature to "trust" an operation like Heat Treating without testing it. Especially since the OP is new to the game, and talking about buying a new oven. Until some things are verified...

    Anodizing Titanium ??

With that unit, a good etch, and a good electrolyte, I get very predictable, very consistent results.

    Anodizing Titanium ??

Multi-Etch from reactive metals is a godsend to the Titanium anodizer. Especially if you want to get the high voltage colors.

    CPMS35VN vs CPM154CM

A little harder to grind and finish than 154. Much easier than S30. I just finished my first 15 blades in S35 a couple of days ago. I Like it.
