Inclusions or carbides in 154 CM????

I just unwrapped a .125 x 1.5 x 18 piece of 154CM, laid out my knife, sat down at the band saw and while cutting through it found my blade unable to proceed forward (like it had run up against something super hard) and then it pushed through (cutting normally again). This happened about 4 times...

    Trail Skinner

I would have not thought of wood bolsters. You really pulled off the burl, mosaic pins and damascus. Very nice.

    Coon Skinner

I always love desert iron wood but those different sized pins are very nice with the handle shape. Nice form over all, proportion, and balance. Very nice!

    Fellow Dog's Knives

Kayla, what color/kind of light are you using? I like the foam box idea. I use a Nikon N90S since my D50 got wet :(

    kiln ?

I totally use my wife's pottery kiln (top loader) to draw my knives. I put furniture inside to get them elevated and ours has a fan that keeps the temperature extremely consistent throughout the kiln. The controller is excellent. As Calvin says, getting them out at 1850 deg F would be a real...

    suggestions on a grinder.

usaknifemaker.com/grinders-sanders-all-kinds-no-weld-grinder-plans-parts- The plans for this sander are about $25. Any resourceful young man can find box tubing and bolts free or cheap. No welding required but you do need a drill. Also, you'll need the wheels. Maybe more resourcefulness is...

    Newbie---- question about engraving

I've tried vibrator engravers, professional trophy shop engravers (very nice and very expensive) and by hand, I'm no artist! I love the electronic etcher. Takes the guess work out, is repeatable, looks professional and mine will do both metal removal (looks like a frosted etch), and metal...

    Can't get it hot enough

I have a forge that I build using LP with a high pressure regulator, forced air. The key is the forced air and the mixture. Once my forge converts... (it's exciting) is sounds like a jet engine and the rolling blue flame is plenty hot!!!

    Inlay

We had lots of former Marines and a few not so "former" ;) SF isn't a place for rigid thinking. I don't know if sight black will transfer the way you want but you can try it. Maybe a rag with kerosene or motor oil... just need a dirty flame.

    Blue Point Checking File

Definitely a file to chase threads that were damaged. Might try mild steel to practice for jimping.

Need help identifying this grinder and opinions on it

This machine was the cream of the crop 30 years ago and like all well designed machines it will still perform very well. I believe it was called a Square Wheel. Any way, great machine and worth the effort and $. 2x72 is much easier to get good belts and for knife makers a better sanding platform...

    #1 in progress ... pre-HT

I agree fully with doing your finish sanding before heat treat. I've been using and heat treating D2 for years. It's a snap (very little elbow grease) if you sand to 600 when it's soft, heat treat in Stainless foil. A friend of mine has been in my shop building his first knife and it's coming...

    knife designs

Oh, and if you prefer to use computer based drawing, try sketchup by google. It's free and is super! there are lots of tutorials on how to use it and boy is it powerful. I used it to design a cigar humidor in 3d and it was awesome

    knife designs

I think new makers should use a thicker steel if they are hollow grinding. I've been reading about problems that they have grinding through the blade or making it too thin. Be sure that your grind lines aren't too far from the edge if you stick with the .125. I fully agree with using a mild...

dust collector??? What kind do you have????

The dust dog is a great one too. I love mine. Also, I had a remote switch added but there are also inline switches so that when you turn on your sander, the dust collector comes on too. I think my 10 gallon shopvac is a fantastic value. I removed the big wide floor attachment and mounted it...
