    Ranch Hand and Red Tide

Thought I'd post my latest and one of my oldest. The Ebony handled knife is the latest and I call it "Ranch Hand". The tang is tapered with mosaic pins. The steel is D2. The dagger is nearly 20 years old but I just photographed it. The handle is micarta and the steel is 440C.

Can you convert this into a contact wheel?

Put a piece of athletic tape around it and down the middle and use it for an idler wheel... Just kidding ;)

Can you convert this into a contact wheel?

I had a home made 1 inch wheel with rubber attached. It separated and then slips left and right, belt wont track. It doesn't come off because I have a steel U shape that holds both ends of the arbor. MY advise, unless you can vulcanize it... don't bother.

    Rigid Copper Tube

You probably know that unlike brass (that has alloys) copper will really oxidize rapidly. Some like it. The Statue of Liberty was intended to turn the hue of green. Hand oils/salts probably affect copper. Also, copper is very soft and pliable. It tends to fill up the teeth of a file because it...

What to do? Looking for some outside opinions.

So, here it is June (almost July). What happened? I've read all 3 pages wanting to find out the answer this story... don't leave me hanging ;) I hope it worked out for both of you. I too have a terrific knife of my Great Grandfathers... well worn jigged bone... My dad kept it in a safe Deposit...

    48" Speed-cut conversion to 72 inch

Has anybody converted a 48" Speed-cut to a 72"? I've added an idler wheel behind the drive wheel giving me additional belt length but the existing tracking (upper idler wheel) won't move the belt side to side. Currently the belt runs center but we need to move the edge of the belt to the...

    info on a 2x42 I purchased

I read that JB weld is a great adhesive and likely less inclined to be destroyed by heat than epoxy. the screw is a necessary failsafe and will prevent a whole host of problems. I bought a piece of fire glass (*pyrex) for my flat platen.

    Hot topic, Cold question

AS with all numbers (statistics etc) be wary of specified and implied. Here's the website again if you want to read more. there is a simple (jeff simple) chart at the top of the page that I tried to copy and paste here but wouldn't do it. The chart is really dramatic looking. It took me about a...

    Hot topic, Cold question

What a fascinating read. Per the following website: http://www.metalscience.com/techinfo_ASM.php Case Studies of Cryogenically Treated Steels Resistance to abrasive wear was investigated in a parametric study. Five tool steels were tested after conventional heat treatment, after cold...

    Hot topic, Cold question

I've been reading about 3 pages of back threads on cryo and heat treat. I'm not ready to take a plunge into Liquid Nitrogen but I do wonder. I know I can go down to the grocery and buy a couple blocks of dry ice. I put some K1 kerosene and dry ice into a cooler, lay my knives in and come back a...

    something diffrent for me

I've never forged a blade although I have a high pressure LP forge, and a huge (to me) anvil. No tongs... maybe a tutorial of how to make my first set. Any way, your knife is inspiring enough, maybe I'll get off my @$$ and cook some steel spikes.

Photography box studio for knife photos

Excellent. that's exactly what I need. Better make nice with the sister-in-law! :) that can be tricky but probably worth the time/effort in many ways. Now if only I can get my grandbaby in this little box studio... ;) (my daughter might not think its funny but I do).

Photography box studio for knife photos

Talk about good news. My wife just bought us a Nikon D 80. Naturally, the knifemaker in me starts talking about how to take studio photos of knives. I've heard about DIY box studios, but don't know where to look for more information e.g. box fabrication, what kind of light, set-up parameters...

    New Motor

Guess I know what I'll be asking my wife for (for my birthday... she's already said she knows I NEED one... the battle is half over). Now all I need to do is prepare her for the value... fortunately she's not cheap so that shouldn't be to bad. A few years ago I said, "honey, how about we go up...
