    New slipjoint

Calvin, beautiful knife! The stag goes great with that design. Forgive my ignorance, but where do the bushings go in the workings; between the blades in lieu of a spacer? Between the liner and the blades? All 3? Thanks for your patience, I'm trying to absorb as much as I can from the fellas...

    New Saddlehorn

Percy, I like it. I'm studying folders as I hope to start my first one when I get back to shore. Any chance you could show it folded, and from the spine? I'm trying to learn how the lock/spring works on slippys. Thanks!

    Nem slip joint

I like it! Did you model that after a particular pattern or sort of figure it out? I'm plotting my first slippy project right now.

First knife attempt ... coming up!

Hard part with a recurve is keeping an even grind around the arcs, which is true of all but a wharny edge to some degree, but a recurve is nothing but arc, like a stretched s. I had a hard enough time on my first knife, flat grind, straight spine, making the belly match in thickness with the...

    what am i working on?

Are you going for a convex edge on the smaller ones? How thick is the steel? That's a chopping blade shape so it makes sense to me to leave some meat on the spine to add weight to the chopping. When you get to actually chopping with those, you may wish you had a little more handle to hang onto...

    Hokkaido Folders

It'd take a micrometer to find any variance on those grinds - wow! I am a jealous of your grindage, sir. Beautiful work!

    Bowie Clip grinding/false edge

I've only done 3 swedges ... I first practiced on my frankenknife, an old kitchenaid chef's knife that is my shop dummy. Pre-HT, I set a bevel on the swedge leaving similar thickness (dime thick) as I did on the blade edge, for the same reason - didn't want it to warp. Post-HT, I finished it...

    craftsman 2x42 belt sander problem

I use the same 2x42; put a ceramic platen on it and shimmed the same as Lagrange. I'm not certain the wheels are square on these machines. But you might consider a bubble jig, as it squares to the belt itself, not to the bench ... if that makes sense. Worked for me!

    My Latest With Rosewood Scales

That is a gorgeous knife; the fit and finish are amazing!! The owner of that will be a lucky person. My CO likes to tell us that getting from 75-99% is easier than getting from 99 to 100. In knifemaking I've not made it to 75, and you are clearly in the 99+ category, so I would value greatly...

    some recent work

That's some great work! The taper-handled one made me scroll back to look at her again :)

    polish up denim micarta??

I just used some white shoe polish on the layered black/blue denim mycarta grip of my daily knife - s'all I have on ship right now, I was looking for some floor wax. Anyway, it cleaned out some grit that was blackening the material, and whitened the threads a little. Looks stonewashed now, which...

A little somethin' I've been playing with

Wicked knife! Is there steel in the knuckle duster as well, or is it all G10? I'd love to see a picture edge on of how you did that.

do you like file work on a knife?

I'm a hack at filework; the one I just did for my son was sort of beautified jimping. But that said, I can see beautified jimping being useful for some knife applications. If you don't have a thumb ramp, or on the inside of a thumb ramp or harpoon design. But I concur, the best looking is on a...

    First Hand Finished Neck Knife

I think that's the epitome of the necker concept right there, and I believe the hand finish not only looks great, but matches the spirit of what a necker should be. Very nice, and I'm challenged to go try a hand finish now.

    Design Thoughts

I'd say the finished one is beautiful - well done! As per the 3 designs, my eye went to the wharny on the right. The "choil" area where the index finger would rest under the guard is very tight - like a notch. My suggestion on that one would be to round out that area to a similar radius as the...
