WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

I know it was complimentary! We always reinforce each other here...with a joke here and there!

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

Maybe 30% on my VFD. Never had an issue before and it's just one wheel. The smallest one and it's rubber coated.

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

I just couldn't sit still and leave it rough cut. Did the initial shape grinding. The bearing must be failing on my small wheel attachment because when I touched them to change wheel size, I burnt the crap out of my thumb...

What's going on in your shop?

Love that blade shape and the handle material. I'm a sucker for green!

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

My knife steel arrived late this afternoon. Only 2 days delivery from AKS, my go to steel shop... Just enough time before dinner to get the blade marked out and rough cut...and I do mean rough cut! I always cut outside the lines to give me some grinding room.

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

I posted in the general area asking if anyone had built a knife like the one in this post. Not much action because it's an odd knife. Almost a "Fantasy" knife or video game prop. I'm going to ga ahead and attempt to make one similar. Here is the picture I was given and a drawing I made. The...

    Introducing my youngest son.

Boss Dog has always tried to keep this a family friendly place. I don't see why there would be a problem. Welcome Jeremy!

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

I have a piece of .171 steel on the way. That's pretty close to 3/16ths! Nothing in the shop fit the bill thickness wise and anything close was too expensive for a test piece.

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

I'll give a build thread serious consideration. I'm waiting on a piece of steel and a $15 POS knife similar to these to get a look at before I jump in!

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

The first picture is actually the one he sent me. That knife is sold by a company called Forseti Steel and sells for $150. He wants a knife made by me as well. I have no idea why he wants one like these...

I couldn't agree more but it's what he wants... I'm giving it a shot!

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

My son in law has put me to task to see if I can pull off this knife. Looking for input from anyone who may have tried this... Steel type and thickness would be my first question. I'm not going to waste any Damascus, that's for sure!

    Yet another grinder thread ....

Sad to see Northridge get out of the grinder business. I have one and it's such a solid machine. Can't comment on the others, but I hear great things about the Reeder.

AEB-L - When do you remove it from foil?

AEB-L is my main knife steel. I plate quench in the foil. Remove the foil, go into the freezer for 30 minutes or so and then into the tempering oven. I tried dry ice and RV antifreeze and saw no improvement in my blades. I don't plan to use LN either.
