    Kelly Depending on the make they could be a high carbon or they could just be case hardened. Not all files make good knives i have had good luck with Black Diamond files. I would get one and test it to see if it through hardens by heating to non magnetic and quenching then see if it will...

    Mark mine looked like mono steel until it was etched .I'm not sure if vinegar will work i used ferric cloride. Are both pieces in the second pic from the same wheel? Give the vineger a try you will have to leave it for a while i think. Bob

    A friend gave me some big wagon wheel iron and of course i figured it to be steel or wrought as usual but when i cut a chunk out and ground a bevel then etched it this is what i found . It seems to be two types of metal welded together now this is new to me but i was wondering if anyone else...

    Pete you would have to get it above 400 degrees to affect the temper so go for it if it gets to hot to hold let it cool down or quench it in clean cool water . Bob
