    1095 Quenching

I think i need to buy some parks as well. Do you need to preheat parks 50 like you do canola oil on 1095? If so is there an ideal temp I should shoot for? Thanks -Aaron

    1095 Quenching

When you quench do you get a lot of vapor bubbles around the blade? I use canola oil for mine and found that at 100 degrees I wasn't quenching fast enough because the vapor bubbles. I do my canola at 130-140 and it seems to work well for me. -Aaron

    Just getting started

Dswait, I have been using canola oil as a quench so far. I'm using a small forge for heat treating, so I don't have actual temp readings. I go to nonmagnetic, and then hold it for a little while. I don't have any definitive way to check hardness either. I just use files to check hardness...

    Hello from Kansas City MO

Welcome to the pound. There's a great group of guys here with tons of great advice. That looks great for a first knife. I found that you learn exponentially quick on the first couple. I also started with 1095 in a simple two brick forge with canola oil. I'm still an beginner, so take it...

some knives fresh off the bench

Those are some nice looking knives. What did you use for the black pin stock on the last picture of the fixed blades? is that carbon fiber or phenolic? or did you etch the pins? They look great. Thanks, Aaron

Nice looking knife. The handle colors really work with dark blade.

    Black knive blade ???

So if my handle wasn't hardened it won't take the same etch? That would make perfect sense. When I quenched the blade, the end of of the handle was not fully submerged in the quench. That would explain why the top of the handle was dark, but as it worked its way towards the bottom of the...

    Black knive blade ???

I just tried this out with PCB for the first time tonight. Sanded to 400 grit. Cleaned with soap then rinsed and wiped with denatured alcohol. Soaked for about 30 minutes. When I pulled it out the blade portion was a nice solid dark black but when it got down to the handle area it sort of...
